Galiano Island lives up to its name “The Gem of the Southern Gulf Islands” in so many ways including its climate that is classified as warm-summer Mediterranean.
The island is home to an abundance of fauna and flora. It is a major flight path for migrating birds and has hundreds of species. Off its shores, there are whales, seals, otters, sealions and many other varieties of sea life. The island also has a large population of deer and you will probably see a few around the Woodstone if you don’t spot them in the forest on one of your hikes.
The western coast of the island is characterized by unique sandstone formations and caves best seen when kayaking. On land, you have a long list of hiking trails to choose from that cater to all levels of activity. One of the popular hikes is Mount Galiano, 311 m (1,030 ft) above sea level. The summit provides you with views over the Gulf Islands, the San Juan Islands and the distant Olympic Peninsula mountains as well. Hiked to your heart‘s content? Other outdoor adventures abound: swimming, beachcombing, kayaking, sailing, and more.
Our beaches are some of the best you will find on the Gulf Islands — white shell or sand, crystal clear water, tidepools ... as pristine as Nature created. Shore accesses clearly indicated along the length of the island help guide you to their breathtaking beauty. One such beach at the Montague Harbour Marine Park marks one of several shell middens — evidence of First Nations dating back more than 3,000 years.
Many artists and artisans have made Galiano their home and the range of their creativity is impressive. Painting, pottery, glasswork, weaving and more are all on display in our local shops and/or personal studios. Don't miss the Saturday Market at the Galiano Lions Park from mid-May to mid-October. It is quintessential Galiano and features farm fresh vegetables, baked goods, jams/jellies, wild seafood, locally grown flowers as well as artistic creations, soaps, essential oils, photos, eclectic clothing, divine coffee and live music!
Come experience Galiano Island — where lifelong memories are made.
